Total Production of NIKKOR Lenses for Nikon SLR Cameras Reaches Sixty-Five Million

TOKYO – Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce that total production of NIKKOR interchangeable lenses for Nikon SLR cameras reached sixty-five million at the beginning of October 2011.
NIKKOR 65 million Logo

In 1959, Nikon (then Nippon Kogaku K.K.) released its first SLR camera, the Nikon F. At the same time, Nikon also released its first NIKKOR interchangeable lenses for Nikon SLR cameras, among them the Nikkor-S Auto 5cm f/2. In the half century since, NIKKOR lenses have become the favorite lenses of a wide variety of users, and have been extremely well received by a great number of photo enthusiasts and professional photographers.
In March 2011, total production of NIKKOR lenses reached sixty million. Since then, Nikon has continued to expand the product lineup by releasing two new NIKKOR lenses for FX- and DX-format SLR cameras. The fact that NIKKOR continues to satisfy a wide variety of photographers is evidenced by production of an additional five million lenses in just half a year, bringing total production to sixty-five million.

NIKKOR lenses released since March 2011

  • AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G (released June 2011)
A fast, standard fixed focal length (prime) lens that produces bright images and offers beautiful blur characteristics and superior rendering performance with a focal length of 50 mm and fast maximum aperture of f/1.8. This lens is compatible with the FX format.
  • AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G (released August 2011)
A standard Micro-NIKKOR lens with a focal length of 40 mm and a maximum aperture of f/2.8. This lens enables extremely close-up shooting with a minimum focus distance of just 0.163 m and offers beautiful blur characteristics. It also offers a unique style when shooting portraits, landscapes and more. This lens is compatible with the DX format.
Announced worldwide on September 21, the Nikon 1 J1 and the Nikon 1 V1 are the first and second cameras in the Nikon 1, Advanced Camera with Interchangeable Lenses, that utilize the new Nikon 1 lens mount system. The F-Mount NIKKOR lenses, with over half a century of history, can also be attached to the Nikon 1 J1 and the Nikon 1 V1 using the dedicated Mount Adapter FT1*. This enables users to enjoy tremendous variety in their imaging expression with the ability to select a lens best suited to the scene, subject, or their own creative intent from a broad lineup of standard and special-purpose NIKKOR lenses. Nikon will continue to expand its lineup of NIKKOR lenses utilizing optical technologies accumulated over its long history to offer increased convenience to users of Nikon cameras.
  • *Autofocus may not perform as expected in some situations or with some lenses. Restrictions apply to mounting and functionality with some lenses.

The NIKKOR brand

As the brand name for Nikon lenses, NIKKOR has become synonymous with high-performance, high-quality SLR lenses. The NIKKOR name comes from adding "R"—a common practice in the naming of photographic lenses at the time the name was established—to "Nikko", the Romanized abbreviation for Nippon Kogaku K.K. In 1933, the large-format lens for aerial photography was released with the name Aero-Nikkor.
NIKKOR has always been ahead of the times. The OP Fisheye-Nikkor 10mm f/5.6 fisheye lens for SLR cameras, released in 1968, was the world's first lens to incorporate aspherical lens elements. What's more, NIKKOR lenses for the latest SLR cameras utilize a number of Nikon's own cutting-edge technologies, including Nano Crystal Coat, which virtually eliminates internal lens element reflections across a wide range of wavelengths.
The current lineup of more than sixty NIKKOR lenses for Nikon SLR cameras offers a rich variety of lenses, including fisheye lenses, super wide-angle to super telephoto lenses, micro lenses and PC-E lenses.

"I AM Nikon" Ad Campaign Wins Gold at Euro Effie Awards

TOKYO – Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce that the "I AM Nikon" advertising campaign run by Nikon Europe B.V. (Takami Tsuchida, President), the center of sales, marketing and services for Nikon imaging operations in Europe, has been awarded the Gold Award at the Euro Effie Awards. The Euro Effie Awards are prestigious and authoritative awards in the marketing communications industry.

The "I AM Nikon" ad campaign was launched in 2010 in order to achieve an ambitious goal of improving market positioning in the compact segment for Nikon, a brand often associated with professional photography and high performance cameras, as well as to attract a wider range of consumers. In order to convey a more accessible, more attractive image, instead of the brand talking about itself, this ad campaign was launched with the concept of Nikon camera customers speaking from their perspective. Through this campaign, brand awareness in 12 European countries increased dramatically with a 37% in Germany*.

Nikon Releases New EDG Fieldscopes 85 VR and 85-A VR

EDG Fieldscope 85 VR
EDG Fieldscope 85-A VR

Nikon Vision Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Nikon Corporation, is pleased to announce the release of its EDG Fieldscopes 85 VR and 85-A VR, new models in the Nikon Sport Optics flagship EDG series.

These new EDG VR Fieldscope models are the world's first*1 fieldscopes to incorporate the lens-shift type VR function. The vibration reduction algorithm, based on Nikon's sophisticated VR mechanism used in NIKKOR VR lenses, has been optimized for these scopes.

The VR function accurately compensates external vibrations caused by wind and operations such as focusing, panning and tilting. The VR function makes composition easy by reducing vibrations to approximately 1/8*2 of image blur caused by vibrations during normal observation. This also enhances focusing accuracy even when manual focus is used during super-telephoto digiscoping. The system provides an effective equivalent to a shutter speed approximately two stops*2 faster and is especially effective when digiscoping in bad conditions such as windy weather.

Key Features
  • The world's first fieldscopes featuring Nikon's lens-shift type VR (Vibration Reduction) system (as of October 2011)
  • It reduces vibrations to approximately 1/8*2 during observation, providing the equivalent of a shutter speed approximately two stops*2 faster in digiscoping
  • Easy VR operation; after turning the VR lock knob, pressing the VR button once activates the function
  • VR function turns off automatically after approximately 30 minutes of turning VR on (Auto power off function)
  • Readily available AA-size batteries are used
  • Extra-low dispersion (ED) glass for chromatic aberration compensation and brighter, clearer viewing
  • Phase-correction-coated roof prism for high resolution
  • Dielectric high-reflective multilayer prism coating on roof prism for the brightest view (straight model only)
  • All lenses and prisms are multilayer-coated for the brightest images
  • Waterproof (up to 2 m/6.6 ft. for 10 minutes)*3 and fog free with nitrogen gas (body/eyepiece joint and body/battery holder joint are water-resistant*4)
  • Stylish design
  • Three tripod mount screw holes provided for flexible mounting; optimum balance achieved through CAE (Computer Aided Engineering)
  • Seven eyepieces exclusively for EDG Fieldscopes are optionally available
  • Built-in sliding hood protects objective lens
*1As of October, 2011
*2Based on Nikon Fieldscope measuring standard (used with tripod)
*3Not designed for underwater usage
*4Water resistance: As tested by water equivalent to 1 mm per minute, falling from a height of more than 200 mm for a duration of 10 minutes (in normal use with an eyepiece correctly attached to the main body).

Customer Reviews

"I did a fair amount of research on this lense before I made the investment, on both consumer and professional boards. My use application - photographing leaping dancers on a dim stage from the back of a high-school-sized auditorium - was beyond the capability of my prior lens, and I was tired of trading off blurry against dim/grainy. This lens is compatible with my Nikon camera body and I needed both the 200mm and f2.8, so it emerged as the best choice for me.

Results - I took more than 8000 photos over two weekends, all live dance, real-time, single-opportunity, no retakes. I'd estimate that less than 2% were bad, probably all of those were operator error (wrong focus point, not enough settling before shooting, etc). The rest ranged from good to amazing (it helps having some great subject material) and close to 1% were poster quality: subjects frozen high in the air, no blurring of the extremities, fast/crisp focus, good color balance despite uneven stage lighting. Focus speed was super-quick (fraction of a second when using the 10meter lock-out setting). I used a tri-pod for about 80%, the only way I could differentiate them from the hand-held (with image stabilization enabled) was by the location from which the shots were taken. Shutter priority, 1/160 second, f-stop ranged from 2.8 (wide open) to 5 or so. Really appreciate the constant f-stop, never had the feature before; when continuously zooming in/out as the subject moves it eliminates the normal trade-off between speed and f-stop selection.

Made a few images into posters - even at 20x30 inch these action shots were crip and clean.

Yes, it is heavy. Invest in a sturdy tripod (one that allows smooth panning if your subject is moving) if you plan to use it for more than a minute or two straight... Yes, it is expensive. I waited a year after first seeing the predecessor in action before buying one for myself. Worth every penny. No, the battery drain is not a problem. Surprisingly minimal additional battery drain: with both VR and auto-focus running continously for each 3-minute shoot, a single EN-EL9 (1000mA-hr) was good for more than 3000 photos.

One final comment, the bokeh is every bit as impressive as others have mentioned... "

"Simply the best lens I've had the chance to use.
1/ Great VR and ability to capture light means better low light shots: I managed to take night shots at ISO 160, 200mm and 1/10th of a second, handheld. I have simply never seen anything like this before.
2/ Improved optics mean cleaner shots: distortion is pretty much inexistent, lines remain almost perfectly straight even on the edges. I use a DX body so can't speak for FX bodies, but on my camera there is no vignetting nor soft corner issues at F/2.8. Tests have seen mention that it's greatly improved on FX lenses compared to the previous model.
finally, the sharpness of this lens is mind blowing: it is probably one of the sharpest lenses ever made.
3/ It works superbly with the TC 1.7 converter if you're looking for a great 340mm lens (not so much with the 2.0 one, be warned).

The only downsides are that it is HEAVY, so you have to be ready to carry something like that around, and that it'll probably make you want to purchase a new body soon just to see if you can push the quality even further :-) "

"UV Filters are usually most people buy just mainly to protect the lens, so am I. I never picky about UV or NC filters, so I settled all my filters on Hoya (reason is I bought few of the Hoya special filters such as Circular Polarizer, and Star-8) and I used to love Hoya filters until a month ago.

I got myself a 2nd hand Nikkor 105mm VR Macro F2.8, the previous owner sold it to me together with the Nikon 62mm NC Filter attached. I was amazed by the clarity the Nikon NC Filter was. You can test it out by simply putting the filters on top of a piece of white paper to check the clarity. Hoya UV had a slight yellowish, else Nikon is clearly a winner.

I threw my Hoya 77mm UV and got myself this Nikon 77mm NC filter. My 17-55mm F2.8 never been so good before. "

"I have been shooting for over 30 years. During college my professors drilled the need for a UV filter to protect your lens. I had been very faithful to that rule.

My wife, a professional photographer, never used a protecting filter.

I was having problems getting a shot of a purple flower. It kept shooting blue. I took off the UV filter and it shot the flower purple.

UV filters are not just an issue with flowers. Many dyes have UV reflecting components, that I was not able to capture.

I now purchase clear filters to protect the lens. I do not see any discoloration on the glass or my photographs. "
